Who is Joannie? Joannie first donned her ice skates at the age of 22 months and showed her potential in 2000 and 2001 by successively winning the Novice and Junior Canadian figure skating titles. The following year, her first in the senior category, Joannie took home the bronze medal. She won the Canadian Women’s figure skating title for the first time in 2005, making her the first skater to win the Canadian National Title in all elements. Since her introduction to the World Championships in Washington in 2003, Joannie's career has been marked by steady progression. Each of her experiences in competition, successful or not, have led her to become the young competitive woman she is today. Her career in international figure skating has been marked with many achievements, including four titles on the ISU Grand Prix circuit (International Skating Union) and three-time medalist at the Four Continents Skating Championships. At the Olympic Games in Turin in 2006, Joannie realized a dream long thought out of reach. In her first Olympic experience, she surpassed her goal of finishing in the top ten by taking 5th place. Life in the Olympic Village and the camaraderie amongst all the Canadian athletes remain cherished highlights of her first games. At the 2010 Winter Olympics Games in Vancouver, Joannie inspired a nation with her strength and courage. She captured the bronze medal just days after personal tragedy struck. Following her stellar performance, she was selected to carry Canada's flag at the closing ceremony of the Games and named co-recipient of the 2010 Vancouver Terry Fox Award for her determination and humility in the face of adversity. She tells us her story, inspiring people to achieve their dreams in spite of life’s obstacles.
